I’ve been in the golf business for almost 35 years - all my professional life. I’m blessed to be able to play 25+ events each year at or near the top of the sport. In addition, I give 30+ lessons per week during the season so there is lots of opportunity for repetitive motion injuries. Let’s face it, much of what we do in golf is hard on the body. If you’re active, you risk injury.
A few years ago, as I was setting goals and priorities for my year I decided to proactively address my fitness level and nutrition plans to see just how far I could go in this sport I love. This led me to three experts who helped me attain some of my goals.
Bruce Lyon is a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified golf fitness instructor with whom I work out weekly all year long. Bruce has helped me gain more elasticity and avoid injury with golf-specific exercises. Bruce is a golfer himself as well as an ironman athlete so you can’t out-work him. His programs are specific for each person, not what you’d get in a typical fitness class. Although I’d worked out almost every day for years, the program he put together specifically for me helped take me to a new level. Bruce and I shared part of the workout he put together for me in a series of videos you can watch in the Golf Fitness section of this website.
For nutrition I worked with Dr. Lee Howard at Compass Cellular Healing who designed a diet for me based on a blood allergen test. Fish for breakfast is a real thing. I learned what I should eliminate from my diet, which is 90% of the effectiveness of any nutrition plan. Within 4 weeks I lost significant weight and inflammation in my body and after 2 years I’m able to stay on the nutrition plan with no trouble, even when eating out. I detailed this diet in this post I wrote last year.
This year after experiencing lower back pain I added Dr. Derek Leist to the team. Dr. Leist was a new golf student of mine and he is also a chiropractor specializing in sports injury. He uses soft tissue therapy, dry needling and corrective exercise programs with his clients to heal injuries or prevent them before they happen. Derek is a golf enthusiast too and is also a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified golf fitness instructor.
